Instructions for making herbal capsules

Herbs should be properly dried

The air should be allowed to circulate freely whole around the herbs. The best way is to keep the herbs out to get dried under the direct sun heating rays.

Parents 'want child gene tests'

Genetic test
Parents believe the benefits of testing their children for the genetic risk of some diseases outweigh the negative consequences, according to US scientists.
In the study, published in the journal Pediatrics, parents who were offered a genetic test supported their children also being tested.
The authors say doctors and politicians need to be more aware of the issue.
Genewatch UK said children should never be tested for adult conditions.
Genetic testing used to be confined to specialist clinics, but direct-to-consumer testing is now possible.
People send a sample to a company in the post and are told if they have any genes which carry an increased risk of illness.
Genetic test
In this study, 219 parents were tested for 15 genetic variants linked to heart disease, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and colon, skin and lung cancer.
They were then asked a series of questions to compare benefits such as reassurance, knowledge and prevention, with risks such as invasion of privacy and psychological discomfort.
The report found that "parents offered the genetic susceptibility test for common preventable conditions tended to consider that the potential benefits of this test for their own child could outweigh its risks".
Professor Kenneth Tercyak, from the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, said: "These tests usually don't offer a clean bill of health and can be hard to interpret even in the best scenario."
Helen Wallace, from genetic science lobby group Genewatch UK, said: "Online gene tests frequently give misleading results because most common conditions such as cancer, obesity or diabetes are not predicable from a person's genes, except in special circumstances.
"Children should not be tested for risk of adult-onset conditions, full stop. They should be allowed to decide for themselves, with medical advice, when they are grown up."
Prof Tercyak said: "The findings of our study should remind clinicians and policy-makers to consider children when regulating genetic tests."

TeloVac pancreatic cancer vaccine trial launched in UK

A trial has begun on a vaccine treating pancreatic cancer, which has the lowest survival rate of all common cancers.
More than 1,000 patients with advanced pancreatic cancer have joined the TeloVac trial at 53 UK hospitals.
Vaccines are usually associated with preventing infections, but this is part of a new approach to try to stimulate the immune system to fight cancer.
The trial involves regular doses of vaccine together with chemotherapy and compares this with chemotherapy alone.
The vaccine contains small sections of a protein, telomerase, which is over-produced by cancer cells. The aim is to stimulate the immune system to recognise the telomerase which sits on the surface of the cancer cells and to target the tumour.

Rhona LongworthPatient
Professor John Neoptolemos from Royal Liverpool University Hospital, who is helping to co-ordinate the trial, said: "The problem is tumours are clever and are able to turn the immune cells into traitors which help to guard the tumour.
"The vaccine takes away the masking effect of the tumour."
Pancreatic cancer has the worst survival rate of all common cancers. Just three in 100 patients survive the disease for five years or more.
Rhona Longworth, 43, who was diagnosed with the cancer in February, said: "For someone who's never smoked and hardly ever drank, it was a big shock.
"I just hope the vaccine works and I'm one person who goes on to live a happy, healthy life after this."
Joan Roberts, 69, said the vaccine appeared to have few side effects and she is keeping her fingers crossed about the impact on her cancer.
"I'm pleased that it's stable and it hasn't got any bigger. You've got to remain positive," she said.
The TeloVac trial is being funded by Cancer Research UK. The charity is supporting trials against a range of cancers, using vaccines or antibody treatments to stimulate the immune system.
Cancer Research UK's chief clinician Professor Peter Johnson said: "One of big problems with cancer treatment is you are almost always left with a few malignant cells and it is from those few cells that the cancer can regrow.
"If you can programme the immune system to recognise those cells and get rid of them altogether or keep them in check then you can effectively stop the cancer from growing back lifelong."
The South Korean manufacturer of the vaccine, KAEL-GemVax, is planning a lung cancer trial later this year using the same technology.
Last year the first therapeutic cancer vaccine was licensed in the US as a treatment against prostate cancer.
The Phase III or final stage TeloVac trial should produce results in just over a year which will show whether the vaccine has a positive effect.
Cancer Research UK is keen to stress that the vaccine is not a cure, but if it works, might prolong life.

Premature birth gene 'discovered'

premature baby

A gene linked to premature births has been discovered, scientists in the US and Finland have said.
The researchers hope their study, published in PLoS Genetics, could eventually lead to a test for women at risk of a pre-term birth.
In the UK, one in 10 babies is born before the 37th week of pregnancy, with potential problems for their health.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said it would help to identify a percentage of those at risk.
The international team of researchers looked to human evolution in their hunt for genes linked to premature births.
In comparison to other primates and mammals, humans have relatively large heads and narrow birth canals.
Acceleration
The researchers, at Vanderbilt University, Washington University and the University of Helsinki, believed there must have been an evolutionary pressure to "adapt and shift the time of birth" to produce a smaller baby.
They looked for DNA which showed evidence of "accelerated evolution" - genes which have mutated more in humans than in other primates.
They identified 150 genes.
The next step was to look for an association with premature births, so the researchers compared those 150 genes in 328 Finnish mothers, some of whom had premature births.
A strong association to pre-term births was found in variants of the FSHR - or follicle stimulating hormone receptor - gene.
Follicle stimulating hormone acts on receptors in the ovaries to encourage follicle (a sphere of cells containing an egg) development and production of the hormone oestrogen.
'Greatest risk'
Professor Louis Muglia, from the department of paediatrics at Vanderbilt University, said: "Ideally we'd like to predict which women are at greatest risk for having pre-term birth and be able to prevent it. That would really have an impact on infant mortality and the long-term complications of being born prematurely."
Professor Ronald Lamont, spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said: "I think it's fantastic, it's a good group of well respected people doing this research."
He said the risk of premature birth was likely to be a mix of genetic and environmental factors.
"In the future we will be able to identify a percentage of people at risk. It won't be the be all and end all, but it will contribute to our knowledge."
In a separate study, a team at Washington State University believe they have identified why eggs are produced which result in miscarriage and birth defects.
