As for Pop Surrealism, There's 'The Meat Show: Paintings About Children, God And USDA Grade A Beef'

I just came across the fascinating work of American painter Mark Ryden. His "The Meat Show: Paintings about Children, God and USDA Grade A Beef" collection was his debut solo exhibit wayyyy back in 1998. Eat Me Daily notes about this quirky but fascinating collection:

"Commonly associated with the genre of pop surrealism or lowbrow art, this first show combined images of innocent, angelic “creatures” with butcher shop settings and whimsical Alice in Wonderland backdrops. With that, crosses, Abraham Lincoln, literal “devil dogs,” and even, yes, third eyes – all among a dancing fury of porterhouses, bacon slabs and whole sides of beef."

Octavio Ocampo's Beautiful and Amazing Illusion Paintings

Octavio Ocampo (Feb, 1943)is a Mexican painter known for his evocative paintings in which detailed images are intricately woven together to create larger images - the optical illusions fading back and stepping forward as you study the pieces, notice the details, and finally recognize the large scale intention. This is what Octavio Ocampo terms his "metamorphic" style. Most of this text was lifted from Ocampos' Wiki here.

The paintings in the gallery provide a glimpse of Ocampo's tremendous skill as an illusion master. Look closely at each painting and you will see several images hidden in every single one.

"This Is Not A Film" - A Short Film About Surrealist Master Rene Magritte

August 15th marks 41 years since the death of Belgian surrealist René François Ghislain Magritte (21 November 1898 - 15 August 1967). He became well-known for a number of witty and amusing images among which "The Son of Man"(1964) the painting of a man wearing a black overcoat and a bowler hat with an apple blocking his face, may be the most famous and best known.

Above are some of my very favorite Magritte paintings: The already-mentioned "The Son of Man", "The Listening Room" (1953), "The Difficult Crossing" (1926), "The Human Condition" (1935) and "Golconda" (1953).

The beautifully done short animated film "This Is Not a Film" which is based on Magritte's work, references over 40 of the surrealist master's paintings.
